Standing water attacks a flat roof three ways at once. It degrades the membrane — UV rays focus through water, freeze-thaw grinds every cycle, and debris decomposes into an acidic soup sitting on your seams. It loads the structure — water weighs roughly 100 kg per square metre for every 10 cm of depth. And it feeds on itself — the weight deepens the low spot, which holds more water, which adds more weight.
That's why today's Ontario Building Code requires positive slope to drainage on new roofs — and why membrane manufacturers like IKO treat chronic ponding as a warranty concern. Water is supposed to leave; when it stays, everything ages faster.

The two reasons Toronto roofs hold water
After a thousand-plus roofs, ponding traces back to two root causes — and knowing which one you have decides everything about the fix:
Built completely flat — because it was allowed
Very common on older Toronto roofs: slope simply wasn't required when they were built, so most were constructed dead flat — zero slope, by design. Every one of them ponds by default; water has nowhere to go and never did. These roofs were waiting for puddles from the day they were finished.
Had slope once — then sagged in the middle
The roof was built with slope, but decades of load and moisture let the structure sag mid-span. And sagging is a feedback loop:

Both of these are legitimate methods, and we install both. But they are not interchangeable — and choosing the wrong one for a middle-sagged roof is how people end up with a brand-new roof and the same old puddle:
Tapered insulation, engineered to measurement
The roof is measured precisely and a tapered insulation package is computer-designed and custom-fabricated to build slope into the assembly. On a structurally sound, stable deck, it's a very good option — slope and R-value in one layer.
Rebuild the geometry itself
For a roof sagged in the middle, this is the only solution that actually solves it. We correct the structure with carpentry — and very often that means lowering the front section at the drip edge, removing existing planks to compensate for the sag, so water finally runs where it should.
The alternative — building everything up to a minimum 8-inch slope over the sag — creates an impractically massive slope with all the height, weight, and cost that comes with it. Lowering the drip-edge side is the smarter geometry.

How much standing water on a flat roof is too much?
The industry benchmark: water still standing 48 hours after rain is ponding, not drainage. Occasional damp patches that dry within a day or two are normal; the same puddle in the same spot after every rain is a geometry problem that only gets worse — because the water's weight deepens the low spot that holds it.
Why does my flat roof pond if it never used to?
Almost certainly the sag spiral: the roof had slope originally but the structure sagged in the middle over time. Pooling adds weight, weight deepens the sag, the deeper sag holds a bigger pool. It's a feedback loop that never corrects itself — it only accelerates.
Why do so many older Toronto flat roofs pond?
Because slope wasn't required when they were built — most were constructed completely flat, zero slope, by design. Today's Ontario Building Code requires positive slope to drainage on new roofs, but the zero-slope era left thousands of Toronto roofs that pond by default.
Will new tapered insulation fix my ponding?
Only if your deck is structurally sound and stable. Computer-customised tapered insulation is a very good method for flat-but-solid roofs — but on roofs sagged in the middle, we've seen it fail many times: the new roof goes on and the same ponding returns, because the deck keeps deflecting underneath. Sagged roofs need the structure corrected with carpentry.
What does a carpentry re-slope actually involve?
Correcting the roof's geometry itself: all old layers removed, deck repairs, and — very often — the front section at the drip edge lowered, with existing planks removed to compensate for the mid-span sag, so water runs to the edge. The alternative of building up to a minimum 8-inch slope over the sag creates an impractically large slope. It's structural work, and it's what we do every week.
Can ponding really damage my roof structure?
Yes — water weighs about 100 kg per square metre per 10 cm of depth, so a large pond puts tonnes of sustained load on framing that may already be weakened. Combined with accelerated membrane breakdown, chronic ponding is the leading cause of premature flat roof failure — and in extreme cases, of structural collapse.
